Tourist - Info

Picture: Hafen1 Flensburg is „the“ shopping city between Hamburg and Copenhagen. Those taking on a shopping trip here benefit from the unique mix of cultures, can fill their bags with German and Danish fashion items, stroll through glass-covered passages, admire the city shop windows and set off to discover romantic court-yards. Quaint tattoo shops, small specialist arts, design and antique shops enliven the city image and stimulate the visitors‘ imaginations.

At Christmas time the citizens of Flensburg transform their city into a truly sparkling sea. The air is fragrant with seductive cinnamon, punch and fried sausage. Handicrafts of both German and Danish design are displayed in small Christmas booths. From north to south, from market to market – crossing right through the whole city.

The famous Kapitänsweg (Captains' trail) runs right through the city too. It starts at the Harbour Museum, the landing jetty for old sailing ships, and leads past the Maritime Museum and the unique Rum Museum of Germany. If you walk along the gangway you will sense how the citizens of Flensburg must have felt centuries ago: barrels full of rum, tarred rigging, salty air. The harbour city operated a brisk trade - worldwide.

Today Flensburg is the third largest and the most successful production location in Schleswig-Holstein. It’s not just „penalty points“ and the revolutionary eroticism of Beate Uhse that come from Flensburg, but here the largest silverware manufacturer in the world, „Robbe & Berking“, manufactures their fine table silver and the Flensburg shipyard makes the famous RoRo ships. From here comes the famous "beer with a pop!“ (referring to the famous sound of the swing top bottles), pure rum from the Caribbean, fine paper, and, and, and...

The region around the Flensburg Fjord tells stories from a bygone era. When sailors brought barrels of Caribbean rum to Flensburg, old saloon steamers shipped their passengers into town and imperial yachts cruised the fjord, sometimes under the Danish flag, sometimes the German one. Five palaces and castles bear witness to the magnificent years which brought the city and the region wealth and cultural inheritance.

Even today a trip on the Flensburg Fjord is an unforgettable experience. With the Danish coast on the one side and Germany on the other, today we sail between the two cultures, weaving a common cultural web over the legacy of the past. This is what makes the people of the fjord so cosmopolitan and tolerant, and the visit so relaxed and pleasant. Whether in a city hotel or in one of the health spas with a view of the fjord, Flensburg and its distinctive fjord offer that bit more for relaxation, fun and culture – by bicycle, boat and on foot!
